The Great Donkey Caper

Nester and Nelda donkeys at the farm

By the novice equine owner

I learned some incredibly important lessons today

  1. Never ever underestimate the Wiles of a donkey
  2. Never ever leave Nelda and Nester without a halter
  3. If your gut tells you “this is probably not a good idea”, I can guarantee you it’s a TERRIBLE idea.

Now let’s be clear, by the grace of God, 4 legit equine people, an ATV and a herding dog, no one was harmed.

Nester and Nelda love to go into the pasture across the lane. It borders the neighbor who has horses and they love to race and visit them.

I have moved them over there several times. They go right over. So I decided this beautiful day to attempt it while neither donk had a halter. Oh but Nelda, the one I least expected decided to go for a little frolic. And then she decided to REALLY go, down the lane, out the gate, on to the highway and into the neighbors pasture. With Nester on her heels. Imagine donkeys with the zoomies.

After chasing from one end of the pasture to another, the piece de la resistance was the donkeys taking a roll in the NEIGHBOR’S pasture! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Also happened to be the neighbor I had not yet met!!

Super incredibly grateful for such lovely neighbors that although they were trying to leave for their own barrel race event, they didn’t hesitate for a moment to help me.

It’s humbling how much I still have to learn, but so grateful I’m getting a chance to do it!!
